Players

How to get the most out of your players

You start off with a squad that will enable you to compete in the lowest rung on the league ladder - Level 1.

The star ratings are a good guide as to how good each player is, however by clicking on each player in turn you can see an exact quality score for each member of your squad.  Use these numbers as a guide as to which players make up your top 11 players.

The formation you play will depend very much on which positions your best 11 can play in.  For example if you have just one striker in your best 11 and four defenders then you can consider playing a 4, 5, 1 or other defence-weighted formations.

By sliding right on the squad list you can select the formation for your best 11.  Each player has up to 3 positions in which they can play, players can be trained to play in more than one position.  On the formations screen you can also determine whether the player prefers to move forwards, stay static or move backwards with just a tap on the player icon.

By swiping right once more you come to the orders menu.  If your best 11 is very defence-heavy then this is the place to encourage them to become more attacking, counter-attacking etc.  You can also decide to play the offside trap, pass short, long, determine the marking style and set how hard you want the tackles to fly in.

There is no perfect formation and set of squad orders, what works against one team does not necessarily work against another.  It is best to pick your preferred playing style and then build your team around them.

Training

There are two ways to improve your team; buy players (which we'll come to later) or improve them through training.

By playing matches players will automatically make progress, in the training section of Top11 you will see a progress bar for each player.  However player's training progress can be quickened by taking part in exercises, click on each exercise to have all your players take part.  You can exclude certain players from the exercise using the 'intensity' button on the training screen - you can also have certain players doing extra exercises (excellent for if they happen to be suspended).

By training your players you increase their attributes, these are 15 attributes in total falling into three groups:

Defence:
  • Tackling
  • Marking
  • Positioning
  • Heading
  • Handling
Attack:
  • Passing
  • Dribbling
  • Crossing
  • Shooting
  • Finishing
Physical and Mental:
  • Fitness
  • Strength
  • Aggression
  • Speed
  • Creativity

When the progress bar reaches 100% for a particular player you will get one point to spend in one of the above three categories.  Top11 will randomly assign the point to one attribute within the category you've selected.

The total quality score for a player is the average of all 15 attributes, so it takes 15 bars filled to increase the total player quality by 1 point.  To increase by 5 points it takes 15 x 5 = 75 filled bars.

Why is 5 points important?

Each time a player goes up 5 points their star rating increases by one (and their value increases considerably).  At Level 1 you get the following star ratings:

  • 0 - 5 quality = 1 star
  • 5 - 10 quality = 2 stars
  • 10- 15 quality = 3 stars
  • 15 - 20 quality = 4 stars
  • 20 - 25 quality = 5 stars
  • 25+ = 5+ stars
If you move to the next league up all of the stars will decrease by 1.  So at Level 4 a player with 21 quality has just 2 stars.  This is to ensure that you can still use the star rating system when you are buying very good players.

Try to aim to have a whole team of 3 star players at any given time.  This will be most difficult at the start of each season but gives you something to aim for.  Having a very good set of reserve players is also a good idea.

Fighting on two fronts

In your first season you will just compete in the league and the cup, however if you finish in the top three in any particular season you will enter the champions league the very next season.

The champions league is very lucrative paying hundreds of thousands for each match.  We'll get to the competition itself later on in this tutorial but at this point it's important to say that you need a good reserve team as you will want to be competing in the league, the cup and the champions league right to the end of each season.
